Long ago, the dark elf Malekith the Accursed (Christopher Eccleston) sought to plunge the world back into eternal darkness using a force called the Aether. King Bor (Tony Curran), father of Odin (Anthony Hopkins), led a battle with his army of Asgardians against the dark elves and Malekith's band of warriors known as the Kursed. Before Malekith could bind himself with the Aether, Bor contained it within a giant stone column and sent it somewhere that it couldn't be found. Malekith then sacrificed his army and escaped with his lieutenant Algrim (Adewale Akinnouye-Agbaje) to remain hidden until they could locate the Aether once again.
In the present day on Asgard, Loki (Tom Hiddleston) is in shackles presented before Odin for his attempt to rule over Midgard. Loki shows no sign of remorse, thinking he committed a benevolent act as a god. Odin thinks otherwise and adds that if it weren't for the compassion of Frigga (Rene Russo), Loki would probably be dead. Odin sentences him to spend the rest of his days in the dungeon.
On Valaheim, Lady Sif (Jaimie Alexander) and the Warriors Three - Fandral (Zachary Levi), Volstagg (Ray Stevenson), and Hogun (Tadanobu Asano) - are battling an army of invaders. Thor (Chris Hemsworth) makes his entrance and engages in the fight with his hammer Mjolnir. A large stone creature stomps toward him, knocking one warrior out of his way. With a swing of his hammer, Thor destroys the creature, forcing the invaders to surrender. Hogun asks Thor where they will go next, but Thor tells him to stay in Valaheim with his people. He bids Hogun farewell before calling upon Heimdall (Idris Elba) to bring him back to Asgard.
Odin notes that there has since been peace and order in the Nine Realms after the Bifrost was destroyed, yet he can sense that Thor continues to miss his love Jane Foster (Natalie Portman). The Asgardians have a feast later that evening, though Thor does not choose to enjoy it.
In London, Jane is on a date with a man named Richard (Chris O'Dowd). They don't talk to each other and they haven't ordered anything. Jane admits that she misses someone who has gone far away. That's when her assistant Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings) strolls in to interrupt the date. She helps herself to some bread before showing Jane one of her gadgets that malfunctions as it picks up a reading. Jane says she's not interested and sends Darcy out. Richard can see that Jane is not into the date, so he allows her to go with Darcy, although Jane is apologetic.
It's briefly shown in a news report that Dr. Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgard) has gone slightly mad, running around Stonehenge in the nude while police attempt to catch him.
Darcy drives Jane and the new intern Ian (Jonathan Howard) to an old factory. They find three kids who lead them to a cement truck. One of the boys pushes up against it and the truck floats in mid-air. The kids also show the astrophysicists a stairwell where they drop certain items that disappear in thin air, only to reappear above them and continuously fall and disappear in the same spots. Several items, like a can and Darcy's car keys (which Ian stupidly threw), do not come back. Jane looks at the gadget and sees that it picks up a reading of an anomaly that is nearby. She walks away from the others and is pulled by a force that brings her to another realm. There, she finds the column holding the Aether. She reaches her hand out and the Aether enters her body. Jane collapses to the floor, while up in space, Malekith awakens in his ship, knowing that the Aether has been found.
Thor finds Heimdall, who reminds him of the convergence, where the Nine Realms will align soon. Thor asks if Heimdall can see Jane, but he cannot, as she is no longer on Earth.
Jane reawakens in the factory. When she runs outside, Darcy has already called the police. Jane is upset with her, thinking it was because of their discovery, but Darcy tells Jane that she's been gone for five hours. Jane has no idea about this. It then starts raining, except around Jane and Darcy. Thor then makes his appearance before the ladies. Jane runs to him and slaps him to make sure he's real, then slaps him again for leaving her. One officer goes up to Jane and grabs her arm, but the force from the Aether creates a powerful push away from her. Thor then grabs Jane and takes her all the way to Asgard.
The Asgardian physicians study Jane and the force within her, which once again throws off anybody it sees as threatening. Odin is not pleased with Jane's presence on Asgard, saying she belongs there "as much as a goat belongs at a banquet table" (Jane isn't happy with the comparison). He believes her bond with the Aether could pose a threat.
On Svartalfheim, another realm, Malekith plots his vengeance against the Asgardians. He takes a molten rock and sticks it in Algrim's gut.
Fandral and Volstagg bring in several prisoners, including a masked Algrim, to the dungeon on Asgard. Loki watches them from his cell as they come in. Frigga, in the form of a hologram, visits him and expresses her concern toward him, though he brushes it off.
Alrgim pulls out the rock and crushes it in his hand, transforming himself into a Kursed. He breaks free and releases the other prisoners to start an attack on Asgard. The Asgardian warriors charge into action, but the dark elves use their weapons that sends anything and anyone into a vortex to oblivion. Volstagg and Fandral enter the fight as more dark elf forces come in with their ships. Heimdalll hops onto a ship cloaked in invisibility, sending it crashing into the sea. He then rushes to activate a shield to take down more incoming ships.
A giant ship crashes into the castle, bringing forth more dark elves. They lay waste to the Asgardian warriors, while Malekith finds the tower where Frigga is hiding Jane. He has become aware that the Aether lies within Jane. He attempts to seize it from her, but Frigga takes out her blade and duels with Malekith, putting up a good fight. Malekith sees that this Jane is a hologram. He orders Frigga to tell him where Jane is, but she refuses. Algrim appears and stabs Frigga in the back, just as Thor enters. He shoots a lightning bolt at Malekith's face, severely scarring it. He and Algrim escape before Thor can strike them. Odin arrives to find Frigga dead. He holds his wife's body in his arms.
?
A funeral is held for Frigga. All the Asgardians and Jane mourn her. Her body is pushed out to sea on a boat. A warrior shoots a flaming arrow once she is far enough, allowing for her pyre to burn. The pyre goes past the falls just over the abyss. Even Loki expresses his grief and rage in his cell.
Selvig is seen trying to explain the convergence to the people in his institution using shoes. He asks for any questions, and all he gets is a patient (Stan Lee in his obligatory cameo) asking for his shoe back.
Odin keeps Jane hidden in case Malekith returns for her. Thor devises a plan with the help of his comrades to get Jane off Asgard. He has Sif free Jane from the guards while Thor asks Loki for help, as he knows a way to Malekith's whereabouts. Loki removes his illusion, showing him walking around his cell looking well-kept, to reveal himself looking messy while everything is thrown all over the place. Loki knows that Thor is desperate to come seek help from him, though Thor believes that the man he once called his brother is still in Loki. He agrees to help Thor in using diversion tactics. He tauntingly disguises Thor as Sif, and even briefly disguises himself as Captain America (Chris Evans in an uncredited cameo) to further push Thor's buttons. With that, Thor cuffs him. When they meet with Jane and Sif, Jane slaps Loki for his attack on New York. Sif also promises to kill Loki if he betrays them.
Thor, Loki, and Jane hop on the crashed dark elf ship. Thor is at first unable to get it started, but once he does, he flies it out of there. The Asgardian warriors chase after them until they hop out of the ship and onto a smaller craft flown by Fandral. As he lets the trio make their way out, Loki is able to transport them out of Asgard.
Back on Earth, Darcy and Ian learn of Selvig's nude Stonehenge episode and they go to the institution to have him released. He is very happy to see Darcy, giving her a long and increasingly awkward hug. They are given some items of his, including his medication and some gadgets he constructed.
Thor, Loki, and Jane arrive in Svartalfheim. They arrive before Malekith and his minions. Loki appears to betray Thor by stabbing him and throwing him down a hill. When Thor attempts to summon Mjolnir, Loki cuts off his hand. He throws Jane before the dark elves, claiming his allegiance with them to spite Asgard. Malekith lifts Jane in the air and extracts the Aether from her. For a brief moment, Jane has a vision of Earth. Thor and Loki then reveal their ruse as Thor shoots lightning at the Aether, supposedly destroying it. However, Malekith is still able to absorb it. He and the dark elves make their way toward their giant vessel as Thor attacks them. Algrim throws one of their vortex weapons in the air, which Loki pushes Jane away from. He is nearly sucked in until Thor pulls him away. Thor fights back against Algrim, but the Kursed beast brutally beats him down. Loki impales Algrim from behind, but Algrim pulls Loki into the blade. Loki decalres, "See you in Hell, monster," as Algrim realizes too late that the blade is attached to his own vortex weapon. Algrim is destroyed, but Loki is dying. Thor vows to tell Odin about Loki's deed, but Loki states "I didn't do it for him." He closes his eyes as his skin returns to it's blue Frost Giant form.
Jane informs Thor that she saw Malekith on Earth, and they deduce that he is planning on going there once the convergence occurs to exact his plan. She then hears her phone ringing. It's Richard calling. Jane is shocked to know that she is getting reception in another realm. She tells Richard to stay on the line as she discovers the can and keys that were thrown around at the factory. She walks further with Thor until they find themselves back on Earth outside the factory. They reunite with Darcy, Selvig, and Ian.
A warrior (really Loki in disguise) goes back to Asgard to report to Odin that Loki's body has been found. Odin appears to have a look of regret on his face.
Jane and Selvig determine that Malekith plans to strike at a spot in London where the realms will align. They arrive at the location outside a library and set up Selvig's gadgets to create energy shifts where the realms meet. Malekith and the dark elves arrive in their giant vessel. Thor battles the villains while Jane and Selvig use their gadgets to transport the dark elves to another location. They also accidentally transport Darcy and Ian somewhere further. Thor and Malekith, in their ensuing fight, are transported through the realms, including Jotunheim (home of the Frost Giants), bringing back a beast with them. At the same time, fighter jets attempt to intervene, getting themselves sent to Valaheim. The dark elves close in on Darcy, but Ian, with the help of the anti-gravitational energy force, grabs a car and smashes them down. Darcy thanks him for saving her life by kissing him.
The realms come closer to converging. Malekith readies the Aether within him to bring forth the darkness. When it seems as though it's too late to stop him, Thor pushes forward to defeat Malekith by throwing him into his vessel. Jane is able to transport him out of there to Svartalfheim. Thor collapses as the vessel starts to crumble and fall. Jane covers Thor but Selvig transports the vessel to Svartalfheim, sending it crashing right on top of Malekith.
Thor returns to Asgard, leaving Jane behind once again. He meets with Odin, who is set to make Thor the new king of Asgard. Thor declines the throne while honoring Loki's sacrifice. He offers Mjolnir to Odin, but he tells him it belongs to him if he be worthy of it. Thor thanks Odin and walks away. With his back turned, the image of Odin disappears to reveal none other than Loki. Now seated in the throne he had long desired, he quietly answers, "No. Thank you."
Mid-credits:
Sif and Volstagg meet The Collector (Benicio Del Toro). They hand him a container that holds the Aether, since having it so close to the Tesseract (another Infinity Stone) on Asgard would be dangerous. When they leave, The Collector states, "One down, five to go."
After-credits:
Jane is sitting at the table by herself when a rumbling sound is heard. She goes outside to find Thor. She runs to him and they kiss passionately. Meanwhile, the Jotunheim beast is running by the factory chasing birds. http://www.themoviespoiler.com/Spoilers/thor2.html
