Enough Said

Eva (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) is a masseuse. In a typical day she opens her Prius trunk, pulls out her heavy portable massage table, puts it over her shoulder, and walks up to each of her client’s homes. One client has bad breath, one lady talks nonstop, and one client meets her at the top of his stairway sipping a cup of tea just watching her lug the heavy table up the stairs.

That evening, Eva is getting ready to go out. She tries to get her daughter Ellen to come with her to a party so they can hang out together as she’ll soon be leaving for college, but Ellen declines.

Eva goes to a cocktail party with her best friends, a married couple Sara and Will (Toni Colette and Ben Falcone). While at the party, Eva sees a client and breaks away to go say hello. The client is talking with a woman name Marianne who is a poet. She introduces Eva as an amazing masseuse, and then makes a hasty exit, leaving Eva and Marianne to make awkward conversation.

Eva returns to her friends excited she just got a new client (Marianne). She also comments that she doesn’t see anyone at the party that she is attracted to. Two older men join their group and Will shares Eva’s comment about not seeing anyone that she’s attracted to at the party. One of the men named Albert (James Gandolfini) he says he also doesn’t see anyone he’s attracted to at the party. They all laugh. He then mentions that he has a daughter going off for college, and Eva says she does too.

The next day, Eva is at Sara & Will’s house and the Will mentions that someone at the party asked for Eva’s phone number. Eva is on the fence about going out with Albert, but then says ok, give him my number.

The next scene is Albert and Eva standing in line for the restaurant. He apologizes as he thought he made reservations. They joke about age, and the new generation. Eva asks what were some of the things that ticked off his ex-wife. He mentioned she thought he was a slob. Not a hoarder, but that he doesn’t much care about how things look. They talk about growing older and have some nice moments of laugher.

When Albert drops her off at home, Eva is not sure she wants to give him a kiss good night. So they shake hands.

The next day she does her usual routine, and also adds in Marianne. Marianne has a beautiful house and asks that Eva take off both shoes and socks. They women start connecting, Marianne sharing that she is dating someone, and Eva tentatively sharing that she had a first date. That he is a little overweight and at first she was put off, but now after the date she thinks it’s kind of cute. There is something comforting about their middle agedness.

Second date, Eva arrives at Albert’s house for a breakfast. He hasn’t put much effort into to it as he’s wearing sweats and is serving bagels. They talk about their kids going to college and talk a bit about why each of them got divorced. He talks about how his habit of eating guacamole and swirling it around to remove the onions really drove his ex crazy. He has an aversion to bare feet. His ex-wife was a fanatic about being barefoot in the house.

They end of kissing a bit. Then kiss some more, and then end up sleeping together.

The next date Albert introduces Eva to his daughter Sage. They meet her for lunch. Sage is going to a fashion school back east. She wants to eat at a fancier restaurant than the one Albert picked out. Over lunch she puts down the school that Eva’s daughter is going to. Albert apologizes for his daughter’s stuck up attitude, and Eva is understanding.

The next week, Eva goes over to Marianne’s to give her a massage. Marianna mentions her date didn’t go well and it’s over. She asks how Eva’s date is going, and Eva mentions she’s getting more attracted to him. Marianna brings out some chips and salsa. Eva is raving about how good the salsa is and all the onions, and Marianne tells the story of her ex and how he had a method to remove the onions from the salsa. Eva then suspects that this is Albert’s ex-wife. Marianne’s daughter, who is at home with a fever, calls out to her mom. Eva sees it’s Sage. Marianne wants her daughter to meet Eva, but Eva hides in the backyard.

The next date, Eva and Albert go to a movie. Albert talks during the movie, and his idea of a whisper is pretty loud. Eva and other patrons make comments for him to be quiet. Eva is a little annoyed.

Eva and Marianne go for a walk as friends. Marianne confesses that she doesn’t have many friends and would really appreciate having a friend she can trust. Eva tells her she would love to be that friend. She then asks more questions about Marianne’s ex and his bad habits. Marianne shares that Albert is a good cook and later found out he only knew how to cook one meal; spaghetti, eggplant and mozzarella. He also just moved into his house, didn’t put energy into decorating it or get any new end tables for the bedroom. She took the end tables, and he now just dumps things on the floor next to the bed.

On a skype session with Sara, Eva tries to justify being friends with both Albert and Marianne, and not telling him. Her rational is that if you were buying a car, wouldn’t you like to know the problem areas from the previous owner?

Eva goes over to Albert’s for dinner. He’s made spaghetti, eggplant and mozzarella. Eva’s enthusiasm falters. He notices and asks what’s wrong and she denies anything. After she tastes it, her enthusiasm comes back up. Albert is clearly smitten with her, and shyly gives her a small gift, a necklace. He helps put it on and gives her a kiss on the neck. Eva pulls away a little bit.

In the bedroom, it’s awkward. They take a break, and Eva goes into his bathroom. She noses around opening cupboards and looking under the sink where he has 10 bottle of partially used mouthwash. She comes back in and asks him why he has so many mouthwashes, and why he doesn’t throw anything away. He’s asking why it bothers her, and she doesn’t mention that she is friends with Marianne. Just replies it’s interesting. He wants to know if she wants to try again to have sex, and she claims to be tired and just wants to sleep.

Albert and Eva are over for dinner at Will and Sara’s. While having appetizers, Eva makes fun of how Albert pushed away all the onions in the guacamole. Over dinner she makes fun of his loud whisper asking everyone to whisper in turn and then last is Albert. Both Sara and Will tell Eva that she is picking on Albert and to stop. Eva continues to get drunk and bring up more problem areas like that he doesn’t have end tables.

On the way home, Albert asks what got into her. That he feels like he just went on a date with his ex-wife. Eva again doesn’t tell him the truth. She then realizes he’s dropping her off at her house vs taking her to his. She asks if he’s coming in to stay over, and he shakes his head. Clearly he’s hurt from the evening.

The next day she’s at Marianne’s when Sage comes in to say goodbye as her dad is there to pick her up. Marianne is pleased as she wanted Sage to meet Eva, and is a little confused when it’s apparent that Eva and Sage already have met. Albert walks in, instead of waiting outside in the car, and Eva tries to play it off that she just discovered she met the two of them at the same party, and just is putting it together now that they used to be married. Marianne feels betrayed, and Albert is just sad. He leaves with Sage, and Marianne suggests that Eva leave too.

Eva goes over to Albert’s house to apologize. Sage is there and tells Eva that he really liked her. Inside, Albert is distant. He is sad Eva let Marianne poison their relationship. He got his heart broken, and he’s too old to hurt like this.

Eva leaves. She drops her daughter off at the airport and is now all alone going thru her routine of clients. Three months pass. It’s Thanksgiving and Eva decides to drive by Albert’s house. She parks across the street and just looks at his window. She sees that he notices her sitting in her car. She waves and gets out of her car. They sit together on the steps and tentatively admit that they both have been driving by each other’s houses. Eva jokes that Ellen’s not going back to school…because she’s built a cage for her. Albert laughs, and then tells Eva that he finally bought some end tables for the bedroom, then admits that it was a joke, he hasn’t bought any tables. Eva laughs and they seem to be shyly reconnecting.

The movie ends.  http://www.themoviespoiler.com/Spoilers/enoughSaid.html
