Closed Circuit

We open to closed circuit cameras in London which watch over a local market. We see numerous people go about their day. Suddenly, in several of the cameras, we see a large white truck back into the market. A man tries to tell the driver that he cannot park in the market but gets no response. Seconds pass, then a massive explosion rips through the market. The truck was a bomb.

Due to an anonymous tip, the police are lead to a storage facility where numerous bomb materials remain. Tracing who owns the rental property leads them to the home of Farroukh Erdogan (Denis Moschitto). The police quickly take him and his family into custody.

Considered the “Trial of the Century” as the bomb attack has left 120 dead and numerous others wounded, the public cries for justice. However, a problem arises; to try Farroukh in court will require classified documents to be presented; evidence that if shown to the public could damage national security. As it were, Simon Fellowes (James Lowe) has been tapped to defend Farroukh in court. The Attorney General (Jim Broadbent) explains via radio interview that such information shall be handled in a closed court. A special lawyer for the defense will hear and see the evidence but will have no interaction with the main lawyer who will defend Farroukh in “open” court.

6 MONTHS LATER
We watch as Martin Rhodes (Eric Bana) rows on the river. He gets a call on his cell phone.

Cut to a church. Simon Fellowes has apparently committed suicide. Martin was apparently a colleague and friend. Later into the service, Claudia Simmons-Howe (Rebecca Hall) shows up.

After the service, Martin goes to his car to see a reporter named Joanna Reece has left her information. The AG talks to Martin to make sure he is ready to handle the Farroukh case, which he will be taking over for Simon. Martin tells the AG he knows he has had personal problems lately; his marriage has collapsed and he has strained relations with his son. Martin tells him he can be counted on. Martin heads off after briefly talking with Delvin (CiarĂ¡n Hinds), his boss and friend. Martin says he might not be able to work with Claudia, and tries to get rid of her.

Claudia will be the Special Advocate for the Farroukh case. However, when she realizes Martin will be the other lawyer, she tries to resign. Her boss doesn’t want her to and uses the reverse psychology of telling her Martin wanted her gone to make her stay.

Claudia gets the run down on Farroukh. He had been in Berlin years ago as a taxi driver when he was arrested for heroin possession. Despite this, he was allowed to travel to London and settled his family there. There is a three year gap between his time in Germany and London. The prosecution believes he was radicalized during that time.

Claudia meets with Martin and blasts him about trying to get rid of her. Martin says they have a conflict of interest working together since they have a past. If they work together, they will have to lie under oath, something he is okay with. Martin says if she wants out, she can tell the judge they had an affair.

Martin and Claudia meet at the courthouse to be brief about the court case. From this point onward, she and Martin are to have no contact whatsoever and they are not to share any information, especially the classified information Claudia will eventually know. When asked if they have any reason they should not be paired together, both lie and say “No.”

Martin goes to the bombing scene and recreates the timeline with Delvin. Delvin says Farroukh is going with the defense of knowing nothing about the attacks; he rented out his storage place to one of the other bombers. The numerous calls between Farroukh and the bomber were about overdue rent money. Martin tells Delvin that is a weak defense that won’t hold up in court. Martin asks to see all the files on the case. Delvin shows him to Simon’s office and says nothing has been touched. Martin gets to work.

At her office, Claudia is stunned to find a man there. The man is Nazrul Sharma (Riz Ahmed) and is helping her with the “closed” part of the trial. Claudia is spooked and quickly deduces he is part of British Secret Service. Nazrul shows her the laptop and safe that she have to use only for the case and the precautions she will have to take. Nazrul tells her that he is here to help and if any problems come up he will “handle” them.

Claudia and Martin work into the night. They both think of their time together. Claudia is being filmed while she sits in her apartment.

The next day, Martin gets some time with his son. His ex-wife is obviously still pissed at him about the affair and is on terrible terms with him.

Martin is having dinner at the court cafeteria only to find Claudia there. He informs Delvin that they cannot talk to each other but Claudia says since the trial hasn’t started yet that isn’t true. Martin finds out that Claudia will be seeing Farroukh first and Martin is less than happy.

Claudia goes to see Farroukh who becomes sick the moment he walks in. Claudia cuts to the chase in regards to that; she knows he is a heroin addict. He is sick because he is using cut prison heroin. She tells him he should be in a program. Claudia tries to talk to him about his case but Farroukh is very unhelpful.

Martin heads to a dinner party with an old friend. Among the guests is a woman named Melissa (Anne-Marie Duff) who says she is in traffic control, a terribly boring job. Also there is Joanna Reece (Julia Stiles), the reporter who left a card for Martin. In a moment alone, the two talk. Martin knows she called Simon numerous times looking for a scoop and Simon reported her. Martin tells her he doesn’t talk to reporters, period.

Martin takes a cab home. He notices the same cab number from earlier in the day. He gets out and calls Delvin. He tells Delvin that they are being “managed.”

Martin and Delvin look over Farroukh’s car. Martin asks the obvious question; how did a man like Farroukh afford it. Finding out that it was towed near a restaurant, Martin goes there and interrogates a waiter, who turns out to be Farroukh’s dealer. Martin asks if Simon asked him all these questions too. The man nods yes.

Claudia goes back to her apartment only to see there is a new doorman; the other one apparently got sick. She goes up to her apartment, only to notice a book out of place, and another out of order. She is still being filmed by someone.

Martin goes to see Farroukh. Claudia in the meantime goes to see Farroukh’s family that is currently in a safe house.

Martin tries to talk to Farroukh but gets little from him. Suddenly, Martin shows him a written message. Farroukh panics and asks for the guard to return him to his cell. Outside, Martin shows Delvin what he wrote; that he believes Farroukh is a MI5 agent. Farroukh was apparently being used to track a terrorist cell and something went wrong; either Farroukh crossed them or he was fed bad information. Either way, the materials that were used to make the bomb were paid with taxpayer money; the government inadvertently funded its own terrorist attack. Delvin is shocked by the implications. Martin goes further, thinking Farroukh is playing dumb because MI5 is working him. However, MI5 is in a tough spot since they cannot admit a known terrorist is an asset.

Claudia tries to gently talk with Farroukh’s family but his son Amir is not willing to help. He screams at the cameras that he wants Claudia gone but also whispers a phrase into her recorder before Nazrul arrives to take her away.

Claudia sits at home, trying to translate the message.

Martin looks at Farroukh’s police report and notices he initially called himself Mussi Kartal. Martin looks up the name and sees that Kartal was named as the responsible party for a U.S. military base bombing in Munich that killed 20 people. Martin realizes that MI5 turned Farroukh in order to ensnare other terrorists.

Martin gets in a taxi, and still thinking he is being watched, talks to the driver about it, though the driver is apparently oblivious. Suddenly, the taxi is hit by a van which speeds off.

Martin recovers in the hospital as they do some tests. The AG shows up and gives some subtle threats, relaying that he possibly is more involved than he is letting on. The AG also knows about Martin’s previous relationship with Claudia and that they lied under oath about it.

Claudia gets the classified documents and signs for their release by Nazrul.

Martin meets with Reece. Martin basically confirms Reece’s suspicions about the case, and Reece tells him that she thinks Simon Fellowes was murdered by the government. Farroukh was looking to get convicted to protect himself and his family, but Simon in doing his job discovered much more. Reece warns Martin to be very careful.

Martin buys a burner phone and calls Claudia but she doesn’t answer. Martin then trashes the phone. Claudia heads into the restroom and pulls away a plastic bin to find an envelope with a soccer ticket. Apparently the phone call was a message for a dead drop.

Claudia heads to the game and sees Martin in the stands. They head into a stairwell to talk. Martin relays his suspicions but Claudia knows he needs proof and part of it is in documents he isn’t allowed to see. Martin tells her he will take care of it in court tomorrow by requesting “open” court to be done first. Martin tells her to be careful as they are most likely being watched, and he is doing all he can to prevent any further deaths, including their own.

At court the next day, Martin pushes for “open” court to be held first, but the judge denies his request, saying “closed” court will be done first. Martin has to leave. While he waits outside, Delvin sits by him and asks about the soccer game. Martin says it was good.
?

During closed court, Witness X is called, who happens to be the Station Chief of MI5. It is none other than Melissa. Melissa is questioned and says the reason these documents must be held from the public is because another informant holds the key to several pertinent investigations. The informant is Amir, Farroukh’s son who had apparently called the authorities on his father.

Melissa is then cross examined by Claudia. Claudia, knowing what Martin told her, goes for the jugular. She asks if Melissa has known of Farroukh previously. Melissa tries to deflect, but Claudia continues, saying the real reason she wants the closed session is because Amir knows something else; something that could give the government a black eye. That Farroukh is a MI5 asset. Melissa’s mouth twitches at the statement, more or less confirming it. The judge rules that Amir will testify in a closed session the next day to tell what he knows.

Martin sees Melissa and realizes she is not in traffic operations. He tells her Claudia is only doing her job. Melissa says all lawyers are alike; they scream for justice but won’t let her do the things needed to protect everyone. Melissa makes a threat against him and Claudia calling her his “girlfriend.” Martin realizes the government knows about their previous relationship. Martin tries to call Claudia to warn her and head to the first place they met but she is wearing headphones so she misses his call. He goes outside and sees in the newspaper that Joanna Reece has been murdered. Martin realizes that he is truly onto something then as the government apparently silenced her.

Nazrul tells Amir that he will have to testify in court tomorrow. Amir tells him he saw him with his father. Nazrul is unfazed and says they will leave at 9am. Amir is unnerved by the man.

Claudia heads home to her apartment. She turns on her answering machine.

Amir throws a dryer into a sink with running water, shorting out all the cameras in the safe house. He makes his escape.

Claudia hears Martin’s message just as her doorman, really a government assassin, tries to strangle her. Claudia is able to injure him and run.

Melissa meets Nazrul at the safe house where Amir escaped. He is on the conspiracy. “Well?” she asks.

Claudia meets up with Martin in the hotel they first went. They both realized that what Amir knows is that his father is an MI5 asset and they are willing to kill him over it. Martin and Claudia realize there is no play to be made; they are outgunned. Martin says they will make a deal and save themselves.

Martin calls Melissa to make a deal but she is livid with asking where Amir is. Martin realizes the only way to save themselves is to get Amir to court to tell what he knows. They just have to find him.

Needing a clue, they finally get Amir’s message decoded to realize he is staying at his aunt’s. They find out he has a hard drive with his father’s files. Just then, Melissa and her men arrive. Martin, Claudia and Amir escape out the back while Nazrul and another man give chase. Martin lets himself be tackled to let Claudia and Amir escape. Claudia hides but is found by Nazrul who proceeds to strangle her. Martin finds him however and knocks him out with a wrench. Finding Amir, they head out into the night.

Martin calls Delvin and asks to pick Amir up at Kings Cross to keep him safe till court. Delvin agrees.

Delvin is stood up by Martin who hides Amir and Claudia out at his boathouse. Martin had good reason; Melissa is with Delvin waiting for Martin. Delvin had apparently been working with her too, being there to steer Martin in the correct direction for their narrative. Melissa tells Delvin that these events will lead her to make a “hard” choice.

As the morning rises, Martin reveals to Claudia that he knew he couldn’t trust Delvin when he asked about the soccer game. He never told Delvin about it; the only people knew about it was her and MI5. Thus Delvin was working with them. Claudia asks about Martin’s son and how old he is now. Martin notes that his son is old enough “to know how badly I fucked up his life.”

Claudia, Martin, and Amir head to the courthouse to give his statement. Martin sees Delvin. Delvin stares at him and Martin says nothing.

Claudia goes into court and begins to ask Amir questions about the flash drive and how it relates to his father.

The AG sees Martin in the lobby and invites him to breakfast. Once there, the AG drops all civility and more or less reveals to Martin that he knows everything and is a part of it. He tells Martin that none of MI5’s involvement will ever come out. For you see there won’t be a trial, because it appears the suspect won’t make it there. If there is no suspect alive, there will be no trial, and will be assumed that the narrative of the attack ends there. Nothing will be discovered about Farroukh involvement with the government as an MI5 asset. And since Amir’s testimony is in closed court, it will be recorded but won’t ever be revealed publicly, giving MI5 total protection from scrutiny in the matter.

We see Farroukh go back into his cell. The security camera for his cell is blacked out. Nazrul is waiting for him with another man, and they murder him, making it appear he hung himself. Melissa, with her back against the wall, decided to just kill Farroukh and have MI5 problems end there.

We see the judge get the notice about Farroukh’s “suicide.” Claudia looks at Amir, horrified by what has occurred.

The AG basically tells Martin if he wants Claudia and him to stay alive, keep their careers, and make sure that Farroukh’s family will not be deported, he will let the matter drop right now. Martin sits, defeated as the AG spins a Devil’s bargain; he realizes that the government won. The system Martin has fought to defend and protect is broken perhaps beyond repair by internal corruption of the highest order.

3 MONTHS LATER
Martin and Claudia reunite at his boathouse. Claudia says he has been hard to track down. Martin tells her he quit practicing law. Claudia tells him she realizes that he feels real guilt that he couldn’t stop what happened and Farroukh’s death. Claudia asks him to come back to the law as they need men with integrity like him. Martin asks her out to dinner, apparently wanting to resume their relationship.

As they head off to eat, we hear a voiceover. Apparently some time later, it is brought to public attention somehow that the government interfered with the Farroukh bombing case and participated in a potentially massive cover up. The speaker is enraged and questions if the entire judicial system is still a just one or is it truly broken. We are left to assume that the full story comes to light, but the overall repercussions of that are unknown.  http://www.themoviespoiler.com/Spoilers/closedcircuit.html
