A creepy doll is facing us. We hear the voices of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) talking to two young women and a young man. This is referred to as the "Annabelle Case". The women believe the doll, Annabelle, is possessed by the spirit of a little girl who had previously died in that house, based on the way the doll appears twisted, and, as seen through a flashback, someone had been writing "Miss me?" scribbled in red crayon, and Annabelle was found in a different spot than where she was originally placed. The Warrens determine that the spirit in the doll was not a demon, but a spirit that meant to possess one of the women. The video featuring the case ends with the Warrens speaking before a class of students. One student asks what they are known as. Lorraine says they simply prefer to be known as the Warrens.
The text scrolls up to say how Ed and Lorraine Warren solved many cases since the 1960's. Ed was the only non-clergyman recognized by the Vatican as a demonologist while Lorraine was a skilled clairvoyant. There is one case of theirs that has been too shocking to reveal until now.
We meet the Perron family as they move into their new home in Harrisville, Rhode Island. They are Roger (Ron Livingston), his wife Carolyn (Lilli Taylor), and their five daughters - Andrea (Shanley Caswell), Nancy (Hayley McFarland), Christine (Joey King), Cindy (Mackenzie Foy), and April (Kyla Deaver). Andrea is less than thrilled about the move, and the family's dog, Sadie, refuses to enter the house, so she is left outside. One sister calls for April, who is sitting outside by the tree playing with a music box. Carolyn looks at the clocks in the house and notices they all stop at 3:07.
The girls play a game called "Hide and Clap" where Christine is blindfolded, her sisters hide, and Christine calls for a clap three separate times to find the girls. When she finds one sister, they accidentally break a wall that leads into a cellar. Roger checks it out and it leads him to the basement. He reminds the girls not to go down there.
That evening, Christine and Nancy sleep in their room. Something appears to pull at Christine's foot, and she blames Nancy. She also complains of a stink, thinking Nancy farted.
The next morning, Carolyn wakes up with a strange bruise on her. April goes outside to look for Sadie, and she is horrified to find that the dog is dead.
Back in Connecticut, the Warrens are with their daughter Judy (Sterling Jerins) and Lorraine's mother Georgiana (Marion Guyot). Ed appears unsettled over something, but Lorraine tells him it wasn't his fault.
More strange occurrences plague the Perrons. Carolyn finds more unusual bruises on her skin. April starts talking to a presumed imaginary friend named Rory, telling him how she misses her dog. Cindy begins sleepwalking into Andrea's room and banging her head against the wardrobe in the room. Birds come flying against the window and breaking their necks. Roger notices doors creaking by themselves. Later that night, Christine senses a more forceful tugging on her leg. She wakes up again thinking it was Nancy, but she is sound asleep. Christine fearfully watches for any motion by the door. She wakes Nancy up to check it out, but Nancy sees nothing. Christine says that there is someone behind Nancy, and then the door shuts suddenly. Christine starts screaming, alerting her parents. She tells them that she saw someone and that it said it wants her family dead.
Ed is preparing to head out. Lorraine asks Ed what he said to her on their wedding night. He jokingly responds "Can we do it again?" but Lorraine reminds him that she said God brought the two of them together for a reason. She goes to join him.
Carolyn plays the Hide and Clap game with her kids. She is blindfolded and goes to find them, leading her into Andrea's room where someone appears to clap from the wardrobe. She is surprised and unsettled to find nobody in the wardrobe as her kids come out of hiding. During the evening at around 3 in the morning, Carolyn thinks she hears clapping from the kids, but they are asleep. Suddenly, the framed pictures hanging from the wall all collapse to the ground and break. Carolyn follows the clapping sound to the cellar. She lights a match and is locked in the basement where two ghostly hands clap from behind her. The activity culminates at night when Cindy goes into Andrea's room again, sleepwalking and banging her head on the wardrobe. Andrea puts her into bed with her, but a banging sound comes from the wardrobe. The two of them see a hideous and haggard figure that jumps from the wardrobe and attacks Andrea. Her parents run into the room to find her screaming with nothing on her.
Carolyn attends an event where the Warrens are speaking. She approaches them afterwards to beg for their help after she tells them that there is something strange going on at her house. Although Ed is reluctant, Lorraine sympathizes when Carolyn mentions her five daughters.
The Warrens meet with Roger and Carolyn, who let them know what's been happening around their daughters. Based on what they've been told, Lorraine determines that a spirit has attempted to latch itself onto the family. Ed and Lorraine record Carolyn giving her word on the hauntings. When the recording is played back, Carolyn's voice is not heard, but instead, a ghoulish voice. Ed brings in two guys, Drew (Shannon Kook) and Brad (John Brotherton), to record the investigations while lights, cameras, and microphones are set up. The crew goes into the basement and detects several motions going on, especially on the piano. The Warrens decide that there may need to be an exorcism performed on the house, but they require more evidence and authorization from the Catholic church.

Lorraine also notices some of the haunted occurrences. As she stands outside with Ed by the lake, she sees a corpse hanging from a tree by the neck. She also speaks to April after hearing about Rory from her parents. April says that he lives in the house and is always sad. She tells Lorraine that she can see him through the music box. Lorraine plays the music and looks through the spiral mirror in the box and sees what appears to be an image of a ghostly little boy.
As Carolyn sleeps at night, at 3:07, she senses something coming over her. The haggard spirit from before is sitting over Carolyn and regurgitates bile into her mouth.
Lorraine notices a picture of the Perron family posing together. She asks Carolyn about it and she smiles, saying it was a beautiful day at the beach and it is a day she can never forget.
The Warrens continue their research of those who previously lived in the house. Lorraine discovers that there used to be a witch named Bathsheba, who was a satanist that sacrificed her baby. When her husband found out, she cursed all who came upon the land, declared her love for Satan and hung herself from the tree outside. The couple also learns of murders that occurred in the house over the past century.
Ed shows footage from a case where a man named Maurice (Christof Veillon) was possessed. While Ed and Lorraine were present during the exorcism, the experience traumatized Lorraine and took a toll on her, which explains why she is able to see the ghostly figures herself. Meanwhile, Lorraine sees more supernatural happenings, such as sheets being blown onto an invisible force as she is hanging them, as well as seeing Judy's body floating in the lake, which she interprets to Ed as an omen.
The Warrens bring in a police officer to confirm the hauntings so that they may get authorization from the church for an exorcism. The crew gathers and sets up, and they catch Cindy sleepwalking again. She locks herself in Andrea's room, where the Warrens and her parents break in to get her out. They pull Cindy out of the wardrobe, but Lorraine falls through the wall and down into the cellar. She hears a voice saying "Look what she made me do", and she sees ghostly figures with slashed wrists. Lorraine runs out of there and tells Ed and the Perrons what she has discovered - Bathsheba possesses mothers to kill their children. Upstairs, the children are gathered, and the spirit begins to pull on Nancy's hair and throws her across the room until Lorraine cuts her hair with scissors.
The Warrens go to a church to try and get a priest to come down for an exorcism, but they require approval. Back at their home, Judy hears noises coming from the Warrens' occult museum where artifacts from their cases are stored. Judy goes downstairs and is locked in by an unseen force. She hears rocking and spots Bathsheba sitting in a rocking chair with Annabelle, which happens to turn it's head to Judy, frightening her. The Warrens rush home to get their daughter out when they get a call from Roger, saying that Carolyn has taken Christine and April.
Upon returning back to the Perron home, the Warrens get Christine out and into a police car. It becomes apparent that Carolyn has become fully possessed and Bathsheba intends on using her to kill April. Seeing no other options, Lorraine tells Ed that he must perform the exorcism because this is what God brought them together to do. Carolyn is strapped to a chair with a sheet over her head. Bathsheba's horrifying face appears as she causes Carolyn to vomit blood. Carolyn rushes to April and tries to attack her with scissors as Ed yells at the spirit, condemning it back to Hell. Lorraine tries to reach through to Carolyn, reminding her of the beach memory and that she loves her children. Bathsheba is expelled from Carolyn's body.
Sometime later, the Perrons get their lives back to normal. Ed goes to put the music box in his museum when Lorraine comes downstairs to tell him that the church has just now approved the exorcism. As they leave, a quote from the real Ed Warren appears, stating that God and the devil are very real. The music box then begins playing as we take one last look through the spiral mirror, looking for something to appear before the film cuts to black. http://www.themoviespoiler.com/Spoilers/conjuring.html
